Nature notes
Deep in the gnarled roots of a hedgerow oak lies a collection of woody, greenish-yellow fragments. They are the discarded wings of field maple helicopters, or samaras, for this is the usual feeding spot of a vole. Field maples are Britain’s only native maple, and in some parts of the country they are the dominant hedging species — particularly in arable areas where field boundaries do not need to be made stockproof with thorny twigs. Field maples support large numbers of invertebrates; voles are also vital to the food web, favoured by kestrels, stoats, foxes and even badgers, and making up 45 per cent of barn owls’ diet.
